Fuel Calculator ⛽ — Trip Cost, Fuel Needed & Efficiency

Fuel Calculator ⛽

Plan your trip fuel easily. Enter the distance you will travel, your vehicle’s fuel efficiency (MPG, L/100km, or km/L), and the local fuel price. The calculator returns fuel needed in liters and gallons, total trip cost, and cost per mile/km. It also includes an optional budget mode to see how far you can go with a set amount of money. Works offline, mobile‑friendly, and privacy‑respecting.

About This Fuel Calculator

This Fuel Calculator is designed to answer the most common question drivers ask before a trip: How much fuel will I need, and how much will it cost? It brings together three things you already know or can easily look up — the distance you plan to travel, your vehicle’s usual fuel efficiency, and your local fuel price — and turns them into clear, practical numbers. Whether you prefer L/100km, km/L, or MPG, the tool adapts to your region and driving habits. The result is a straightforward estimate of fuel required (in liters and US gallons), total trip cost, and cost per unit of distance. If you enter a budget, you can also see exactly how far that amount of money is likely to take you.

The calculator is fast, mobile‑friendly, and privacy‑respecting. It runs entirely in your browser, which means there’s nothing to install, no accounts to create, and no tracking. That makes it easy to use on the forecourt, at home while planning, or on the go. It’s also flexible enough for day‑to‑day errands and long road trips alike. If you travel internationally, you can switch between miles and kilometers, and between liters and gallons, without changing your mental model — the tool handles conversions behind the scenes and reports the results consistently.

What It Calculates

  • Fuel Needed: Based on your distance and efficiency. Shown in liters and US gallons so you can compare with pump readings.
  • Total Trip Cost: Fuel needed multiplied by your local price per liter or per gallon.
  • Cost per Distance: A handy figure that shows what each kilometer and mile will cost with your current assumptions.
  • Budget Mode: If you provide a budget, the calculator estimates the maximum distance you can travel and the amount of fuel it buys.

How the Math Works

The core of the calculation is the relationship between distance, efficiency, and fuel. If you enter efficiency as L/100km, the tool converts it to km/L using the formula km/L = 100 ÷ (L/100km). If you enter MPG, it converts to km/L with the factor 1 km/L ≈ 2.35215 MPG (US). Once efficiency is in km/L, the liters required are simply liters = distance_km ÷ (km/L). Gallons are liters divided by 3.785411784. For cost, the tool converts your price to a common base of price per liter and multiplies by the liters required; cost per kilometer is price_per_liter ÷ (km/L) and cost per mile follows by converting kilometers to miles.

Step‑by‑Step: How to Use It

  1. Enter your trip distance and choose kilometers or miles.
  2. Enter your fuel efficiency and select whether it’s L/100km, km/L, or MPG (US).
  3. Type your local fuel price and specify whether the price is per liter or per gallon.
  4. (Optional) Add a fuel budget and an optional currency symbol if you want it to appear in the results.
  5. Click Calculate. The results update instantly and include fuel needed, total cost, and cost per km/mile.

Where & When to Use

  • Trip planning: Budget vacations, road trips, and weekend drives.
  • Daily commuting: Estimate weekly or monthly spend and compare route options.
  • Car shopping: Compare real‑world costs between vehicles and engine types.
  • Fleet & business: Provide quick estimates for deliveries, on‑site visits, or service calls.

Examples

Imagine a 650‑kilometer journey in a car that averages 6.8 L/100km and a local price of 1.85 per liter. The calculator converts 6.8 L/100km to 14.7 km/L and estimates 44.2 liters required. That equals 11.7 gallons (US) and a total cost of roughly 81.8. Cost per distance is about 0.126 per km and 0.203 per mile. If your fuel budget was 60, the same inputs suggest you could travel around 470 km before refueling.

Tips to Save on Fuel

  • Keep tires at the recommended pressure and remove roof racks when not needed.
  • Accelerate smoothly, maintain steady speeds, and avoid unnecessary idling.
  • Plan errands to reduce cold starts; engines are less efficient when cold.
  • Follow maintenance schedules for filters, spark plugs, and oil changes.
  • Use eco modes and cruise control where appropriate and safe.

FAQ

Q: Does this support US and metric units?
A: Yes — switch distance between miles and kilometers. Enter efficiency as MPG, L/100km, or km/L, and pick whether fuel price is per gallon or per liter.

Q: Can I use it offline?
A: Yes. It runs in your browser with no internet connection after the page is loaded.

Q: Do you store any data?
A: No. The calculator does not save or transmit your inputs.
